2014 Cargo Theft Load Value Increases by 36% - Thieves Putting Effort Into High Value Loads
According to a report released by CargoNet, there was nearly $90 million worth of cargo that was stolen from truck –trailers in 2014. Although the overall number of incidents fell to 844 from 1,098 in 2013, the average total value of goods stolen per incident has increased from $143,957 in 2013 to $181,681 in 2014 – a 36% increase.
Truck drivers and operators are advised to pay closer attention to their vehicles while travelling, as the rise for targeted thefts increases. “Truckers should frequently make sure they’re not being followed, especially by a car with multiple occupants and out-of-state plates,” CargoNet warns in its report.
