8 Tips to Avoid Deer Accidents

This is the time of year deer and animal hits increase dramatically. It important to remind drivers about the hazards associated with the wild animals on the roadway. More than one million vehicles every year strike animals in the roadway, often causing significant damage and to the vehicles and in rare cases, injuries to the drivers.

Here are 8 tips to guide you to safety while driving through deer season:

  1. Don’t steer for deer! If you can’t avoid a deer, it is better to hit it than to lose control of your vehicle and cause a bigger accident. Swerving could cause the vehicle to flip or veer into oncoming traffic, causing a more serious crash. Swerving can also confuse the deer as to where to run.
  2. Be aware of deer crossing signs. They are installed for a reason.
  3. Be alert when passing through a deer crossing zone.
  4. Drive cautiously during early evening and early morning hours when deer are most active.
  5. Deer often travel in groups. Do not assume that the road is clear if one deer has already passed.
  6. Deer often follow railroad tracks, streams, and ditches. Be extra cautious near bridges and overpasses
  7. If you see a deer on or entering a roadway, slow down and blow your horn to scare it away. Deer often fixate on headlights, so it’s usually not effective to flash your lights.
  8. If you hit a deer, don’t touch it. It may be more dangerous fighting for its life.
