BC Hwy 17 & Hwy 91 Connector Intersection Rollovers
March 2015 – A safety assessment was submitted to the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure regarding the Highway 17 and Highway 91 Connector intersection. Although the design of the intersection complies with the engineering guidelines, there is still an increased risk of truck rollovers.
The intersection was completed and opened in December 2013; since then between the short periods of time from March to August 2014 there have been at least 5 reported truck rollovers at the intersection.
In a recent interview with Vancouver’s News 1130 Radio - Louise Yako, BCTA’s President & CEO, noted that speed reduction is the best way to deal with the challenges at the Highway 17 and Highway 91 intersection.
Drivers should be careful when travelling over 26km/h on Highway 17 (aka South Fraser Perimeter road) going westbound and Highway 91 going southbound.
Short term solutions:
- Posting signs and monitoring truck rollovers
- Installing an active warning sign to show the speed of the vehicle and recommended speed
Long term solutions:
- Replacing the intersection with a grade-separated facility (this is a last resort due to high costs and disruption)
