ICBC Sending Letters of Cancellation for MJV Exit Tax Invoices
On December 6, 2013, Ministry of Finance representatives confirmed that anyone who has been issued an invoice for MJV exit tax for reasons other than licensing a vehicle for use solely in BC (see our previous article Legislative Changes Proposed For MJV Exit Tax for details) will receive a notice from ICBC cancelling the invoice. Carriers that pay the invoice will have to wait until the legislation is amended before they will be able to claim a refund. Carriers that have not yet paid the invoice should not do so. ICBC's letter of cancellation will arrive within the next couple of weeks.
This does not apply to carriers that have a removed a vehicle from prorate and plated it for use solely in BC. In these cases, exit tax continues to apply (consistent with the old PST system) and the invoice will be payable.
