Container Tare Weight Database Ready to Help with SOLAS
The Bureau International des Containers is the only non-governmental organization that links all groups interested in containerization and intermodal transport.
Recently the bureau has launched a pilot database that provides a convenient source of container tare weight data for all carriers, manufacturers, operators, lessors, shippers, forwarders, authorities and other international organizations who need to meet SOLAS mandatory container weight verification requirements. There is no charge to use it; however you do need to sign up.
According to Canadian supply chain magazine Materials Management & Distribution, data for half a million containers are already uploaded to the Technical Characteristics Database, and container owners and operators are adding new files daily. Once fully populated, the database will enable all users to access the vast store of container tare weight and other technical characteristics simply by querying the container number.
