Safe Driver Week is October 15 to 21
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Operation Safe Driver Week takes place this year from October 15 to 21, 2017. During this time, law enforcement will be identifying and issuing warnings or citations to commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers who show unsafe driving behaviors. Some of the dangerous driver behaviours that will be on law enforcement radar include:
- Distracted Driving
- Texting while Driving
- Failure to use a Seatbelt
- Traveling too Close
- Improper Lane Change
- Failure to Obey Traffic Control Signals
Such unsafe driver behaviours are the leading cause of crashes; they are the reason for 88% of large truck crashes and 93% of passenger vehicle crashes. In 2016, nearly 1000 warnings or citations were issued to drivers in Canada for unsafe behaviours, with contravening local laws as the top violation for commercial vehicle drivers, followed by speeding.
During this year's Safe Driver Week, a Be Truck Aware campaign is being launched to help passenger vehicle drivers understand the importance of giving trucks space on the road. For more details about Safe Driver Week, visit cvsa.org
