Annual Stolen Vehicle List
On Wednesday Dec 3, 2014, the Insurance Bureau of Canada released the most frequently stolen vehicle list. Out of the top 10 spots, the Ford F-series occupies 7, showing that these vehicles are highly targeted within Canada.
The frequency of auto theft has decreased in Canada, dropping by 8% between 2012 to 2013, and many provinces saw a decrease in the number of thefts. However, there was still 72,804 vehicles stolen in Canada last year, and there were still some provinces that saw increases in the amount of thefts. Both Newfoundland and Labrador saw a 2% increase, while Alberta had an 11% increase. The Yukon saw the highest increase at 29%.

A number of stolen F-series trucks were seized this year at ports in Montreal and Halifax which were re-vinned with the intention of exporting. Along with an increase in thefts for F-series trucks, there has also been a rise in thefts of higher-end vehicles, such as Lexus, Audi, BMW and Mercedes. It is expected that the thieves are stealing the cars in order to ship them to West Africa. It is recommended that when you are planning to buy a used car, be sure tod purchase the car from a reputable dealer.
It is also recommended that the vehicle by inspected by a trusted mechanic, as that the individual have a vehicle history check run. IBC advises buyers to beware and drivers to remain vigilant. Make sure you don't leave keys in your car and never leave a running vehicle unattended. Cars should also be parked in a well-lit area, closing car windows and locking doors, and putting valuables and packages in car trunks in order to deter professional thieves.
